I’m a soil and crop scientist at Lancaster University interested in how we manage phosphorus for our food production. Phosphorus is an essential element for life so we need to eat it in our food and it helps our crops grow better when we add it as fertiliser. But we use to much of it and at some point in the future we might run out. Because we use to much, phosphorus gets lost into our rivers and lakes where it causes environmental problems such as eutrophication and algal blooms. My work looks at how we might use phosphorus more sustainably.
